Why the connection is a separate project
Designing the power plant itself and designing its grid connection are two separate, closely related tasks. The connection defines how the energy produced is fed into the grid — from the connection point, through cable type and cross-section, to the metering point and protective equipment. An error or incomplete documentation at this stage is the most common cause of project delays.
Standard and non-standard connections
Most smaller systems use a standard (typical) connection — a standardised solution built by the distribution system operator according to predefined conditions.
For connections that don't fall under the standard type, the investor may, with the operator's authorisation, finance and build the connection or part of it themselves. In that case, once the building permit is obtained, the investor deals directly with the operator to sign a separate agreement defining mutual rights and obligations, which replaces the standard offered agreement.
Procedure through the unified electronic system
Connection requests are filed electronically through the unified procedure system. Once the investor completes construction, the connection request is submitted to the competent authority, which must forward it to the distribution system operator within three days.
For larger production facilities, the request is accompanied by a specific data set needed to prepare a connection study, along with proof of payment for its preparation. The study analyses in detail the new facility's impact on the grid and defines the technical connection conditions.
Bidirectional meter and registration
For smaller systems (households and housing communities), once the site is technically ready, the distribution operator installs a bidirectional meter that measures both energy drawn and fed in. After signing a supply contract with net metering, the customer is entered into the Prosumer Register, formally acquiring that status.
